Japan Cements Green Power Oversight
9 Dec
Summary
- Japan will revise the electricity business act in 2026.
- Third-party checks will ensure safety of large solar farms.
- Concerns over wildlife and landscape impact spurred the changes.

Japan is strengthening environmental protections against the impact of large solar power projects. The government plans to revise the electricity business act around 2026, requiring independent third-party organizations to review the safety of new solar farm constructions. This initiative arises from significant public opposition to mega solar facilities built near environmentally sensitive sites, such as the Kushiro Wetlands in Hokkaido.
The proposed revisions aim to mitigate worries about the adverse effects of these developments on local wildlife, endangered species, and natural landscapes. Currently, safety checks for solar farms are largely handled by the operators themselves. The new independent body will assess renewable energy projects with capacities exceeding 10 kilowatts.
Furthermore, the government is considering amendments to the endangered species conservation act by next summer. These comprehensive measures signal a commitment to balancing renewable energy expansion with ecological preservation and maintaining Japan's natural beauty.
