13 Oct
Summary
- Night access to Sam Sand Dunes restricted to protect wildlife.
- Laser lights banned at nighttime events to avoid disturbing animals.
- Hotels must manage waste to prevent sanctuary pollution.
The forest department in Jaisalmer has introduced significant restrictions on tourist activities in the Sam and Kanoi areas of the Desert National Park. To safeguard wildlife and the delicate desert environment, access to the Sam Sand Dunes is now prohibited after sunset. This measure also encompasses a ban on laser lights during nighttime cultural events.
Camel safaris, sightseeing, and other tourism operations within specific dune areas will cease after dark. The department has also addressed concerns regarding waste management, with some hotels reportedly dumping refuse within the sanctuary. Tourists have been observed littering, posing a threat to wildlife.
Hotels and tourism operators are now mandated to ensure proper waste disposal and educate guests on maintaining the cleanliness of the dunes. The forest department emphasized that such dumping violates National Green Tribunal directives. Laser lights are also prohibited during cultural programs to prevent disturbance to wild animals and their habitats, underscoring the importance of conserving the park's ecosystem.
