ITREK Plants Native Trees for Wildlife Week
4 Oct
Summary
- Thirty native tree saplings planted near Ponmudi shola forest.
- Four Western Ghats native species planted to support local ecosystem.
- Clean-up drive removed plastic waste from Ponmudi's natural environment.

ITREK, an organization dedicated to responsible trekking and environmental conservation, celebrated National Wildlife Week with a significant tree-planting initiative at Ponmudi on Saturday. Thirty native tree saplings were planted near the shola forest adjacent to the cafeteria, with support from the Forest department and Ponmudi Ecotourism.
Experts from JNTBGRI and the Forest department collaborated to select four tree species native to the Western Ghats: Vateria indica, Cullenia exarillata, Syzygium mundagam, and Syzygium stocksii. Cullenia exarillata is particularly important as it provides food and habitat for the endangered lion-tailed macaque.
Alongside planting, ITREK members, numbering around 25 and led by founder Suresh Sam Chandy, also conducted a successful plastic clean-up drive. This dual effort aimed to enhance the local ecosystem and remove detrimental waste from Ponmudi's natural surroundings.
