Summary
- Burmese pythons are invasive and devastating Florida's ecosystem.
- Pythons have caused over 90% mammal population decline.
- Specialized techniques are used to remove invasive pythons.

An Instagram video of a Burmese python consuming a 77-pound white-tailed deer underscores the significant ecological threat posed by these invasive reptiles in Florida's Everglades National Park. Introduced from Southeast Asia, their population surged after Hurricane Andrew in 1992, and the local climate has allowed them to thrive.
These large snakes, capable of reaching 18 feet and over 200 pounds, have become apex predators. Over four decades, they have caused an estimated 90% decline in medium-sized mammals, with some species extirpated locally. This ecological imbalance also impacts endangered species like the Florida panther.
Combating the invasion involves innovative strategies such as using radio-tagged 'scout snakes' to find breeding females and specially trained sniffer dogs. The Florida Python Challenge, alongside the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's PATRIC program, has led to record numbers of python removals, with over 1,000 captured between May and July 2025.
Burmese pythons swallow prey whole due to their inability to chew. Their exceptional ability to consume large prey, like the 77-pound deer (over two-thirds of the snake's body weight), is attributed to a remarkably large maximal gape, with soft tissues between the jaw bones providing significant elasticity. This allows them to engulf prey much larger than previously assumed.
