Deadly Mosquitoes Breeding in UK: Health Alert Issued

Invasive Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, known carriers of Zika virus, dengue fever, chikungunya, and yellow fever, have been discovered breeding in the UK for the first time. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a warning and is advising households on property protection after detecting the mosquitoes and their larvae near residential areas in east London.

This finding follows years of concerns that climate change and rising temperatures are facilitating the northward spread of insects across Europe. Health officials emphasize that there is no current evidence of locally acquired human infections linked to this detection. Dr. Jolyon Medlock of UKHSA noted that while the species is not established in the UK due to the overall cold climate, increased survival of such invasive species is expected in a warming world.

Previously, sporadic Aedes aegypti mosquitoes were found in the UK after traveling from abroad, but conditions were not suitable for them to breed. The UKHSA has confirmed that the larvae found in east London have been destroyed and the area is under continued monitoring, with enhanced surveillance nationwide. Residents are encouraged to help reduce mosquito breeding sites by removing standing water from outdoor spaces and to support detection efforts through the UKHSA's Mosquito Watch scheme.
