A female wild elephant, which received veterinary treatment for a severe leg injury, has been found deceased. The elephant was treated on September 6 in the Sirumugai forest range of the Coimbatore Forest Division. The injury, located on its left forelimb below the wrist, was caused by an iron wire believed to be a snare, which had cut deep into its flesh.
Frontline forest staff had been monitoring the elephant after the surgical removal of the wire. They provided prescribed medicines by placing them inside fruits. However, the elephant went out of their observation on September 13 and was later found dead on September 15 in Thamaraipaali. A post-mortem examination has been arranged for the elephant's carcass.
