Indrayani River Suffocates: Fish Die-Off Sparks Legal Action
16 Jun
Summary
- Untreated sewage discharge and reduced river flow caused fish deaths.
- Legal action proposed against Dehu Municipal Council for river pollution.
- Laboratory analysis is underway to determine the exact cause of the pollution.

A large number of fish perished in the Indrayani River near Dehu on Saturday, June 14th, prompting an urgent investigation into the deteriorating water quality. Officials suspect a combination of reduced water flow, untreated sewage discharge, and a subsequent drop in dissolved oxygen levels created lethal conditions for aquatic life.
The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation's removal of bund plates for a water supply scheme exacerbated the problem by reducing water retention and flow, leading to stagnant conditions. This, coupled with sewage inflow, is believed to have caused a critical decline in dissolved oxygen.
In response, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has proposed legal action against the Dehu Municipal Council for river pollution. Water and fish samples have been collected for laboratory analysis, with results expected to clarify the extent of the damage and the precise causes.
The Indrayani River holds deep religious and cultural importance for devotees visiting Dehu and Alandi. Environmental experts and local residents are demanding immediate measures to prevent future ecological disasters and restore the river's health.
