Madhya Pradesh's first pair of one-horned rhinoceroses will soon call the Kamla Nehru Prani Sangrahalaya in Indore their home. This significant wildlife acquisition is being facilitated through the Central Zoo Authority's animal exchange program, involving collaboration with the Assam government. The rhinos are anticipated to arrive from Assam sometime after October, pending the completion of all necessary approvals and official procedures.
The zoo in charge, Dr. Uttam Yadav, stated that this transfer will make Indore zoo the first in Madhya Pradesh to house this species. The Central Zoo Authority's initiative is designed to promote conservation and genetic diversity among wildlife in accredited zoos across India.
To prepare for the new arrivals, the zoo is constructing a specialized enclosure. This habitat will aim to replicate the natural environment of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros, featuring open grasslands, shallow water bodies, and marshy areas to meet the animals' behavioral and ecological needs.
The Indian one-horned rhinoceros, primarily found in Assam's Kaziranga National Park, thrives in grasslands and wetlands. Their arrival in Indore is expected to be a major draw for visitors and bolster the zoo's conservation and educational objectives.
