India's Solar Surge: A Record 10.9% of Power

In the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, solar power emerged as a significant contributor to India's electricity grid, supplying over 10.9% of the total generation. This milestone was achieved as solar output surged by 37% year-on-year, reaching 57 billion units. India's overall electricity generation saw a 9% increase, hitting a record 524 billion units during this period.

The surge in solar power occurred as the nation grappled with unprecedented peak electricity demand, which climbed to a record 271 GW in May. Notably, solar generation was crucial in meeting this demand, supplying over one-fifth of the electricity during peak hours on 61 days of the quarter. Battery storage systems also began to support demand, contributing up to 4.1 GW during evening peaks.

Despite this growth, grid constraints led to curtailments of renewable energy, with significant amounts of solar and wind power being cut or backed down. Gujarat recorded the highest curtailment instances. India's installed capacity reached 549 GW by June, with non-fossil sources comprising 54%. Experts emphasize that transmission expansion and faster battery deployment are vital for fully leveraging renewable energy potential.
