India's Electric Mobility Frontrunners Revealed

As of August 4th, 2025, India's electric mobility landscape has seen significant progress, with several states and union territories emerging as frontrunners in the country's transition towards sustainable transportation.

The first edition of the India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI), launched by NITI Aayog in 2025, has revealed that Delhi, Maharashtra, and Chandigarh are leading the charge. The index tracks and evaluates the performance of all Indian states and union territories across three core themes: transport electrification progress, charging infrastructure readiness, and EV research and innovation.

According to the index, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Maharashtra are the top performers in transport electrification, while Haryana, Karnataka, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh are leading in charging infrastructure readiness. Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Haryana, and Telangana have emerged as frontrunners in EV research and innovation.

The data shows that India's EV market saw a notable rise in 2024, with private vehicle adoption of electric two-wheelers and cars reaching 5.3%, translating to over 12 lakh EVs registered that year. By the end of 2024, the country had installed more than 25,000 public EV charging stations, a significant milestone in the country's efforts to build a robust charging network.

The IEMI report also highlights that 29 states and union territories in India have already notified EV policies, with four more in the draft stage. These policies aim to drive localized action through targeted incentives, regulatory support, and region-specific strategies aligned with national goals.
