India Gears Up for BS-VII Emission Norms by 2029
15 Oct
Summary
- New BS-VII emission standards planned from April 1, 2029.
- Norms will be rolled out in three phases over six years.
- Stricter limits on pollutants like nitrogen oxides and PM set.
India is poised to introduce stringent BS-VII emission standards for new cars and SUVs, with a phased rollout beginning April 1, 2029. This move by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is part of a six-year plan to enhance pollution control measures across the nation.
The proposed BS-VII norms will be implemented sequentially, with the first phase commencing in April 2029, followed by subsequent phases in April 2031 and April 2035. These updated standards mandate reduced emissions of critical pollutants, including nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, and particulate matter.
The enforcement of BS-VII standards aims to build upon the progress made with the current BS-VI regulations, which were adopted directly by skipping BS-V to expedite environmental protection efforts. The new norms are aligned with European emission benchmarks and will not affect the compliance or lifespan of existing vehicles.
