The Swachh Bharat campaign has now reached the extreme environment of Antarctica, with Indian winter teams at Maitri and Bharati stations actively participating in cleanliness and space-optimization drives. These efforts are taking place amidst temperatures as low as -48 degrees Celsius, highlighting a dedication to organized workspaces regardless of conditions.
The 45th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica's winter team, led by Scientific Officer Huidrom Nageshwar Singh, has taken over major operations. Notably, the winter crew at Bharati Station comprises three Indian women, including two scientists and a medical doctor, showcasing their role in these remote scientific outposts.
Maitri Station, established in 1988, is situated on an ice-free area and can accommodate up to 25 people in its main building, with additional capacity in summer facilities. Bharati Station, commissioned in 2012, is located approximately 3,000 km east of Maitri and has a capacity to support up to 47 personnel in its main building, with expanded accommodation for up to 72 during summer.
Both stations are equipped with advanced facilities, including regulated power supply, automated heating and air conditioning, and dedicated satellite channels for communication with the Indian mainland. These comprehensive setups ensure the continuity of scientific research and operational efficiency in the challenging Antarctic setting.
