Agrivoltaics: Crops Thrive Under Solar Panels in India
25 Aug
Summary
- India's first agrivoltaics project tests 17 solar systems.
- Spineless cactus experiments yield food, fuel, and vegan leather.
- Project aims to increase farmer income significantly by 2030.

India's first integrated agrivoltaics demonstration project, spanning 65 acres in Uruli Kanchan, is innovating land use by combining crop cultivation with solar power generation. The BAIF Rural Innovation Centre is testing 17 solar panel systems across 30 crops and over 150 cactus varieties.
This project aims to enhance productivity on marginal, low-rainfall land. Researchers are exploring various solar panel integrations, including elevated, vertical, and rooftop systems, generating approximately 750 kilowatts. Initial findings show increased yields for crops like spinach under panel shade.
Beyond solar power, the centre is developing spineless cactus for food, fodder, fuel, and high-value products like vegan leather. BAIF plans to submit policy recommendations to the Indian government after the study concludes in March 2027. The organization aims to reach one crore families by 2030, significantly increasing their income.
The BAIF Development Research Foundation, founded on Gandhian principles, has expanded its reach across 18 states. Its Foundation Day celebration highlighted awards for rural development contributors and discussed ambitious goals for economic upliftment by 2047.
