India Tackles Marine Litter with AI & Satellites
20 Sep
Summary
- Ocean modeling, AI, and satellites will identify marine litter hotspots.
- A national initiative aims to tackle and remediate ocean pollution.
- Pilot phase launched in Visakhapatnam with local universities.

India is initiating a comprehensive national effort to combat marine litter and ocean pollution. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) in Hyderabad will spearhead this initiative by utilizing a combination of sophisticated technologies.
These tools include ocean modelling, satellite remote sensing, and artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML)-based systems. Their primary function will be to identify, monitor, and forecast areas prone to accumulating marine litter, often referred to as hotspots.
The pilot phase of this national endeavor, designed to create India's first integrated marine litter tracking framework, has been launched in Visakhapatnam. This collaborative effort involves Andhra University and Vignana Bharati (VIBHA).
Extensive scientific studies are planned around Visakhapatnam to pinpoint sources of plastic pollution, track its movement, and determine accumulation zones. These studies aim to develop effective strategies for waste removal and recycling, supporting a circular economy and a cleaner marine environment.
