India Braces for Heavy Rains: Monsoon Intensifies

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast indicating active monsoon conditions across India for the upcoming week. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected over East India during the next three to four days. Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is predicted for the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim from September 9-14.
Specific states in East India are set to experience significant rainfall. Jharkhand can anticipate widespread rain from September 9-11, while Odisha is expected to see similar conditions from September 10-12. Bihar and Jharkhand may also receive isolated heavy rainfall on September 9-10 and September 9-11, respectively. Odisha could experience very heavy rainfall on September 10.
Central India is also anticipated to see increased rainfall activity. Chhattisgarh and east Madhya Pradesh are forecast to receive fairly widespread to widespread rain from September 10-14. West Madhya Pradesh might experience similar conditions from September 12-14, with heavy rainfall likely over parts of Madhya Pradesh on September 12-13 and Chhattisgarh from September 10-14.
Southern states are projected to receive scattered rainfall throughout the week. Coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Lakshadweep could experience more widespread rain from September 10-12. Telangana is likely to see fairly widespread to widespread rainfall from September 12-14. The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds up to 60 km/h over parts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
The active south-west monsoon, which has seen cumulative rainfall 14% below normal as of September 7, poses potential impacts on agriculture, transport, and local infrastructure in vulnerable areas. Heavy to very heavy rainfall was recorded in several parts of eastern and central India in the 24 hours prior to Tuesday morning.
