India Launches Marine Litter Tracking Framework

India has initiated the pilot phase of its pioneering integrated marine litter tracking framework, NIRMaL Sāgar, in Visakhapatnam. This significant launch, occurring on Saturday, marks a crucial step in combating pervasive coastal and ocean pollution within the country.

The framework leverages a powerful combination of satellite remote sensing, sophisticated ocean modeling, and artificial intelligence-enabled tools. Its primary objective is to precisely map marine litter hotspots and effectively track the movement of debris across oceanic regions.

This innovative system is designed to forecast accumulations of waste, thereby enabling the strategic deployment of clean-up operations. During this pilot phase, comprehensive scientific studies will specifically target Visakhapatnam's coastal zones to pinpoint plastic waste sources.

Furthermore, the initiative aims to trace the drift patterns of this waste and develop effective recycling strategies to promote a circular economy. The launch was supported by participation from over 1,300 individuals, including naval personnel, coast guards, and local communities.
