India Launches E85 Fuel: A Greener Drive Ahead?
5 Jun
Summary
- E85 fuel launched in New Delhi on World Environment Day.
- New fuel aims to reduce pollution and dependency on fossil fuels.
- Expanded network of E85 stations planned across India by 2027.

India has launched E85 fuel at an Indian Oil Corporation station in New Delhi, coinciding with World Environment Day. This initiative is a key part of India's strategy to diversify its energy sources and promote cleaner transportation. The introduction of E85 follows the recent market release of vehicles compatible with this fuel, from manufacturers like Hero MotoCorp and Maruti Suzuki. This move is intended to significantly cut pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
The E85 fuel aims to achieve multiple objectives, including enhancing energy security and reducing the reliance on imported fossil fuels. It also supports the domestic production of biofuels, thereby creating additional income streams for farmers. Minister Hardeep Singh Puri highlighted that E85 is distinct from E20 fuel, and existing E20 vehicles will remain functional, with E85 dispensed only for specifically designed vehicles.
The government plans an extensive rollout, with 50 to 100 E85 dispensing stations expected in cities like Delhi NCR, Mumbai, and Bengaluru within weeks. The network is targeted to grow to approximately 5,000 stations by the end of 2027. Ethanol blending has already resulted in substantial savings of foreign exchange and a reduction in crude oil imports. E85 fuel offers a potential reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by up to 61% compared to conventional petrol and is priced lower than E20 fuel.
