Summary
- Union Cabinet approves Rs 2,585 crore scheme for small hydro power.
- Initiative targets 1,500 MW renewable capacity by 2030-31.
- Projects will be run-of-river, avoiding dams and displacement.

The Union Cabinet has given the go-ahead for a Rs 2,585 crore scheme dedicated to the development of small hydropower projects. This strategic move is set to bolster India's renewable energy capacity by an estimated 1,500 MW.
The initiative focuses on implementing run-of-river projects, a sustainable approach that avoids the construction of large dams and the subsequent displacement of communities. This ensures that the expansion of clean energy aligns with environmental and social considerations.
Currently, India has identified potential for 21,000 MW from small hydro projects across numerous sites. The scheme, which will run until 2030-31, is projected to attract substantial investment, estimated at Rs 15,000 crore, further enhancing the nation's clean energy portfolio.
