Work has commenced to clear a significant illegal waste dump comprising an estimated 20,000 tonnes of rubbish near Kidlington, Oxfordshire. The site, located beside the A34, has been accumulating waste over several months, including shredded plastics, polystyrene, and tyres. Arborists started felling trees on Wednesday to ensure safe access for the extensive clearing operation.
The Environment Agency was alerted to the illegal dumping in July and issued a cease-and-desist order. Despite initial delays and public pressure, the government has now prioritized the cleanup, which is expected to take approximately six to nine months to complete. Environment minister Mary Creagh emphasized the government's commitment to prosecuting waste criminals.
A criminal investigation into the incident is ongoing. The waste, stretching about 150m through a field near the River Cherwell, has raised concerns about environmental protection and public safety. The government assures that measures are being taken to address the issue swiftly and effectively.
