Indira Gandhi International Airport has been recognized as 'water positive' by CII-Triveni Water Institute, signifying a significant environmental achievement. This means the airport now restores more water to nature than it consumes, a first for an Indian airport handling over 40 million passengers annually.
The accomplishment was driven by extensive groundwater recharge efforts, including 625 rainwater-harvesting structures and two newly installed underground reservoirs with a total capacity of 9 million liters. Additionally, a 16.6 million liters per day zero-liquid discharge Sewage Treatment Plant ensures all wastewater is recycled.
Treated water from the STP is repurposed for HVAC systems, landscape irrigation, and toilet flushing. The airport also employs efficient irrigation methods and a state-of-the-art water treatment plant. This milestone reinforces IGI's commitment to becoming a net-zero airport and enhances its climate resilience.
