Iceland Ditches Bags for Online Orders
16 Jan
Summary
- Iceland is piloting bagless online deliveries in select regions.
- This initiative aims to significantly reduce packaging waste.
- Raw meat and cleaning products will still be bagged for safety.

Iceland is currently trialling a significant shift in its online shopping service, moving towards bagless deliveries in select regions. This initiative, which began testing in areas like West Yorkshire on January 10, 2026, aims to drastically reduce the amount of packaging waste generated by online orders.
Customers in the trial areas will no longer have the option to choose paper, insulated, or reusable bags for their deliveries. Instead, all items will be transported in loose crates, with hygiene and safety protocols ensuring that raw meat and cleaning products are appropriately bagged. This represents a notable change from the current practice where customers can pay for various bag options.
The supermarket has stated that this trial is part of its ongoing commitment to enhancing customer service and reducing its environmental impact. Iceland has previously made strides in sustainability, including a commitment to eliminate plastic from its own-brand packaging and has already removed single-use plastic bags from online orders.
