Study Names Hyderabad Dump One of World's Worst

Summary
- Dumpyard ranks among the four most polluting globally.
- Daily waste of 9,000 metric tonnes fuels severe pollution.
- Residents face contaminated water and toxic air daily.

The Jawaharnagar dumpyard in Hyderabad has been classified as one of the top four most polluting dump sites globally by a recent study from the University of California. This facility processes approximately 9,000 metric tonnes of waste each day, contributing significantly to environmental degradation.
High levels of methane emissions, equivalent to one million SUVs, are released hourly, accelerating climate change and posing severe health risks. Residents living within 500 meters of the dumpyard contend with leachate-contaminated water and soil laden with heavy metals like lead and arsenic.
This ongoing exposure has led to a range of health problems, including respiratory issues, kidney failure, and skin allergies among the local population. The situation is compounded by adjacent waste-to-energy plants, further impacting air quality in the surrounding areas.
