Humpback Whale Euthanized After Oregon Coast Stranding
23 Dec
Summary
- A 26-foot humpback whale was euthanized after a failed rescue attempt.
- The whale became entangled in crab pot fishing gear.
- Whale entanglement is a major threat, with 36 confirmed cases in 2024.

A young humpback whale was humanely euthanized on the Oregon Coast after a prolonged rescue attempt failed. The 26-foot, 6,000-pound whale became entangled in fishing gear, a critical issue impacting marine life. Crews worked through the weekend of November 15-17 and into Monday, employing trenches and pulley systems to aid the stranded animal.
Despite dedicated efforts by NOAA Fisheries, the Oregon Marine Mammal Stranding Network, and the Oregon State Police, the whale could not be safely guided back to sea. By Monday afternoon, officials determined euthanasia was the most humane option due to the whale's declining condition and the falling tide.
This tragic event underscores the dangers of fishing gear entanglement, a significant threat to whales, especially humpbacks. In 2024 alone, 36 entanglements were confirmed off the coasts of Oregon, Washington, and California, the highest number since 2018. Efforts are underway to develop ropeless fishing gear and reduce commercial crab gear in critical whale migration areas.
