Construction for Hull's innovative low-carbon underground heating system is set to commence this week. The Hull District Heat Network project will involve fitting pipework along sections of Lowgate, Guildhall Road, and Wilberforce Drive. These essential works are scheduled to take place between September 9 and October 11.
The project's objective is to create a network that transfers heat generated from waste at an energy centre on Trippett Street to various buildings throughout the city. Council representative Chris Jackson highlighted the necessity of these works for delivering the project's long-term advantages.
During this period, city centre traffic will be rerouted, with northbound diversions via Alfred Gelder Street and George Street, and southbound via Freetown Way, North Bridge, Great Union Street, and Drypool Bridge. The Lowgate car park is expected to remain closed for up to eight weeks to accommodate the construction.
Work will be confined to weekdays between 07:30 and 17:00 BST. While efforts will be made to minimize disruption, the council acknowledges potential inconvenience for commuters. Dates are subject to weather conditions, with potential for some overnight or weekend work if necessary.
