Houston Sells Airport Land for Parks, Not Planes

Houston has officially divested itself of a 1,400-acre parcel of land near Brookshire, acquired nearly forty years ago in 1986 for $5.7 million. The city's original intent was to construct a third major airport to alleviate pressure on existing facilities. However, this plan was repeatedly thwarted by significant opposition.

Environmentalists raised alarms about the site's critical role as a wintering ground for geese and waterfowl. Furthermore, the economic downturn of the 1980s diminished the demand that had initially justified the airport's construction. By the late 1990s, the project was effectively defunct.

Recently, the Houston City Council approved the sale of this land to Waller County for $19.7 million. This significant transaction marks a pivot from aviation ambitions to the development of public amenities. The land is slated for transformation into parks, wetlands, and crucial flood control infrastructure.

Waller County officials expressed surprise at the sale, having long assumed Houston would retain the property. While approximately 600 acres are under a conservation easement, the county plans to utilize the remaining areas for regional detention basins and lakes to manage drainage issues. The acquisition also sets the foundation for Waller County's first county park system, offering residents recreational opportunities like fishing and picnicking on the Katy Prairie.

The sale aligns with Houston's broader financial objectives, aiming to secure revenue for essential city services such as waste collection.
