17 Aug
Summary
- A significant peatland fire has impacted Holme Fen Nature Reserve.
- The blaze, which began on August 8, now affects half the reserve.
- Firefighters are making steady progress in tackling the large fire.

Fire crews are in a more advantageous position as they continue to combat a substantial peatland fire at Holme Fen Nature Reserve. The extensive blaze, which ignited on August 8, has now impacted approximately half of the nature reserve.
Area Commander Wayne Swales of Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service reported that crews are achieving steady progress and are actively assessing their strategies to gradually reduce the firefighting operations. He credited the progress to excellent teamwork across the county and crucial support from national resilience colleagues.
Despite the fireground remaining hot over the weekend, cooler weather has aided the firefighters' efforts. Previously, Swales had likened the extreme working conditions to "boil in the bag" scenarios due to the intense heat.
