Summary
- GBPNIHE will coordinate ICIMOD activities in India.
- A dedicated cell in Almora will streamline projects.
- Projects undergo rigorous three-stage evaluation.
The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change has appointed Almora's GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment (GBPNIHE) to coordinate India's activities with the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD). This collaboration seeks to consolidate efforts from Himalayan states, universities, and research bodies to tackle trans-boundary environmental issues.
A new ICIMOD cell will be established at GBPNIHE's headquarters in Almora. This center will facilitate scientific knowledge exchange and manage projects addressing climate change impacts, biodiversity loss, water security, and disaster risk reduction in the Indian Himalayas. Research on sustainable agriculture and socioeconomic development will also be integrated.
Projects will undergo a rigorous three-stage evaluation, starting with an initial screening at GBPNIHE, followed by assessment by the university's scientific committee. Final approval will come from a panel chaired by the environment ministry secretary. This process ensures projects align with national priorities and possess scientific and technical merit.
The new framework aims to strengthen the connection between research and practical interventions in managing fragile mountain ecosystems. GBPNIHE's director expressed enthusiasm, highlighting the institute's expertise in Himalayan ecology. MoEFCC officials emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to address the region's environmental and developmental challenges.
