31 Oct
Summary
- Villages adopt climate adaptation measures like horticulture and water source revival.
- A study identified 25 anticipatory adaptation solutions across five sectors.
- Strengthening disaster preparedness and integrating resilience into development is recommended.
Villages throughout Himachal Pradesh are proactively implementing climate adaptation strategies, according to a recent study by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW). These initiatives range from transitioning to horticulture crops to restoring traditional water sources and enhancing disaster preparedness.
The study, which focused on 12 gram panchayats in Mandi, Kullu, Sirmaur, and Shimla districts, found that all villages had experienced socio-economic impacts from climate change and had undertaken measures to adapt. Researchers identified 25 anticipatory adaptation solutions across five key sectors.
Examples of these solutions include farmers in Bajaura shifting to persimmon cultivation and women's groups in Thana Kashoga restoring five springs. Shoghi village established a disaster management committee after the 2023 floods and landslides, providing villagers with crucial training.
The study, supported by ICIMOD, recommends strengthening panchayat-level disaster preparedness and integrating climate resilience into village development plans. Officials emphasized the importance of moving from reactive disaster response to anticipatory planning to address increasing climate extremes.
