A viral video by a foreign traveler has brought attention to the widespread littering in Himachal Pradesh, a state renowned as the 'land of the gods.' The tourist expressed deep concern over garbage accumulation and appealed for responsible waste disposal, particularly from the roughly 30,000 vehicles entering the state capital daily. Environmentalist Pradeep Sangwan emphasized the need for urgent policy changes and community involvement to manage waste in this ecologically fragile region. His NGO, Healing Himalayas, has established eight facilities that collect approximately nine tonnes of waste daily across Himachal, preventing it from polluting rivers or being burned. The Himachal Pradesh High Court has recently taken strong stances on waste management. The court criticized the Manali municipal council for transporting unsegregated wet waste and has set July 8 for a hearing concerning waste disposal at Rangri. Furthermore, the court is also reviewing unscientific solid waste disposal in Dharamsala, with directives issued to local authorities for reports by July 2. The State Pollution Control Board has also filed complaints against authorities and a private company for failing to clear waste in Kasol and Manikaran, areas that have previously attracted the National Green Tribunal's attention for significant garbage dumping.
