Summary
- Hedge laying techniques are being used to enhance wildlife near Blagdon Lake.
- This traditional method promotes dense regrowth, providing vital animal habitats.
- The two-year project aims to significantly transform local hedgerows and biodiversity.

A water company is employing ancient hedge laying techniques to revitalize biodiversity near Blagdon Lake in Somerset. This traditional craft involves laying trimmed stems horizontally to encourage dense, vertical regrowth.
This method allows more light to reach the base of hedgerows, fostering ideal conditions for wildlife. Unlike modern trimming, hedge laying creates safe havens for endangered species like hedgehogs and farmland birds.
Approximately 1,800 meters of hedgerow have been transformed, with the project slated for completion within two years. To protect nesting species, work will be suspended during sensitive months.
This initiative is expected to bring about a significant ecological transformation, welcoming a host of species back to the area. Bristol Water anticipates a visible change in the hedgerows and is proud to be part of this important conservation effort.
