Heatwaves Reveal Stark Social Divides

Summary
- Smartphone data tracks refuge-seeking during heatwaves.
- Malls and parks are vital refuges for those without AC.
- Cooling centers and flexible work hours are key adaptations.

Extreme heatwaves are increasingly common, prompting research into how people adapt. A recent study utilized smartphone location data from seven countries—Brazil, China, France, India, Nigeria, Turkey, and the United States—to analyze behavior during heatwaves in 2022 and 2023. The findings, published in Environmental Research Climate, indicate that people primarily retreat to their homes during periods of extreme heat.
However, public spaces such as shopping malls and parks also serve as important refuges, particularly for those lacking air conditioning. The study noted that specific demographics, like individuals aged 18-35 in Mexico, face a disproportionately higher risk of heat-related mortality. This vulnerability is often linked to outdoor work and inflexible schedules. Consequently, researchers advocate for incorporating community cooling centers and flexible working arrangements into comprehensive heat action plans.
