Heat domes can endure for weeks, suppressing cloud formation and blocking cooler air, leading to dangerously high temperatures under constant sunshine. The stubborn nature of these systems is partly attributed to the jet stream, a high-altitude air current that drives weather patterns. When the jet stream meanders or buckles, it slows down weather systems, allowing heat domes to develop and dominate.
Scientists assert that while attributing a single heat wave to climate change requires detailed analysis, heat waves globally are undeniably growing hotter, more frequent, and longer-lasting. Europe, in particular, is warming at an accelerated rate compared to other continents. This warming trend is significantly influenced by ongoing emissions of heat-trapping gases, predominantly from the combustion of fossil fuels.
