In the late 1800s, Hawaii's sugarcane plantations faced a severe rat infestation, prompting the introduction of the Indian mongoose as a solution. This predator, known for hunting rats in its native range, was brought to Hawaii Island in 1883 and later spread to other islands, though Kauai remains mongoose-free.
The plan quickly unraveled due to a simple oversight: rats are primarily nocturnal, while mongooses hunt during the day. This temporal mismatch meant the introduced predators had minimal impact on rat numbers. Without effective rat control, the opportunistic mongooses turned to more vulnerable prey.
Hawaii's native ground-nesting birds, eggs, and reptiles, which evolved without land predators, became easy targets. This predation has been linked to the decline of at least eight endangered Hawaiian bird species. Seabirds and sea turtle nests also suffered significantly.
The ecological damage is substantial, with mongoose predation and related crop losses estimated to cost Hawaii and Puerto Rico approximately $50 million annually. Eradication from Hawaii Island, Oahu, Maui, and Molokai is considered unrealistic due to their widespread presence and rapid reproduction.
Current conservation efforts focus on protecting critical nesting sites through trapping and predator-proof fencing. The mongoose introduction serves as a stark warning about the unintended consequences of introducing species for pest control, particularly on island ecosystems.
