Forest campsite poses "risk to life," says EA

Summary
- Campsite on flood plain poses risk to life, Environment Agency warns.
- Pollution concerns raised over foul water drainage system.
- Impact on local wildlife habitats and species needs more consideration.

The Environment Agency has issued a stark warning regarding a proposed campsite development in Hamsterley Forest, County Durham. Plans submitted by Forestry England and Forest Holidays outline the construction of 70 cabins, a campsite, and associated facilities. The agency highlighted that the campsite's location on a valley floor flood plain presents a "danger" to campers, as flood warnings might arrive too late for effective evacuation.
Further objections center on the potential for "unacceptable risk of pollution" from a proposed non-mains foul water drainage system. A local resident expressed concerns about wastewater discharge into Bedburn Beck, which flows through his garden. The agency also noted insufficient consideration for the impact of noise and disturbance on local species and habitats, and a lack of information regarding water voles and otters.
Durham County Council acknowledged the Environment Agency's objections and stated they would be carefully considered alongside all other responses during the planning process. The agency recommended relocating the campsite to an area with a reduced flood risk to mitigate dangers to life and property.
