Halifax Water: Earthy Taste Safe to Drink
2 Dec
Summary
- Naturally occurring geosmin causes musty water taste.
- The compound is harmless and safe to consume.
- Drought conditions affect water sources for Dartmouth.
Halifax Water has identified a naturally occurring compound, geosmin, as the cause of a musty taste noticed by some residents. This earthy flavor, similar to that found in beets or mushrooms, originates from bacteria in soil and algae. Officials emphasize that geosmin is completely safe to drink and does not indicate pollution or treatment failures.
The utility noted that geosmin was first detected in Pockwock Lake in 2012 and can also affect water supplied to Dartmouth from Lake Major, due to current drought conditions necessitating water sharing. While boiling or chilling the water won't eliminate the taste, adding lemon juice may reduce the odor.
Residents in affected areas remain under voluntary water restrictions. Halifax Water stressed the need for significant winter snow and spring/summer rains to replenish lakes and avoid similar issues next year, advising the public to prepare for continued restrictions.
