Gurugram Battles Pollution: New Plan Targets AQI Drop
27 Feb
Summary
- Gurugram's average AQI is 198, with a goal to reduce it to 178.
- A budget of ₹291 crore allocated for road construction and anti-smog guns.
- The city aims to improve air quality by controlling road dust and emissions.

Gurugram's population of nearly 2,250,000 and over 400 industries present a substantial challenge for air quality management. The city's average Air Quality Index (AQI) from 2021 to 2024 stands at 198, categorized as 'moderate'. As of 2026-02-27T00:26:11+00:00, officials aim to lower this average to 178 by the end of the year.
An action plan, submitted to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in February 2026, targets a reduction in PM2.5 from 96 µg/m³ to 86 µg/m³ and PM10 from 196 µg/m³ to 176 µg/m³. Effective control over road dust and vehicular emissions is projected to improve air quality by 10% immediately.
The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has earmarked ₹285 crore for road construction, repairs, and dust reduction initiatives, alongside ₹6 crore for truck-mounted anti-smog guns. A 'dust-free roads' program will target 528 km of roads for intensive cleaning. The MCG plans to acquire additional mechanical sweeping machines and increase its sanitation workforce.
Previous pollution-control efforts over the last three years, costing over ₹20 crore, have not yielded significant improvements. The new plan emphasizes scientific planning, infrastructure support, and continuous implementation to address past shortcomings.
