Gurugram Residents Unite for Citywide Cleanup: Expats and Locals Lead Charge for Cleaner Streets

On August 22nd, 2025, expatriates and local residents of Gurugram, one of India's fastest-growing cities, launched a citizen-led cleanliness drive in a rare display of civic unity. The initiative began with volunteers clearing the area around the Guru Dronacharya Metro Station, which was once strewn with heaps of unattended waste.

The drive was supported by the NGO Garbage Free India, which works with schools and residential communities on waste segregation and sustainable waste management. Volunteers, including expatriates from Serbia and France, joined local residents in donning gloves and urging others to act responsibly. They emphasized that long-term commitment is vital to building a culture where every resident, local or expat, understands the shared responsibility for keeping the city's streets clean.

Gurugram currently faces significant waste management challenges, with official statistics showing a decline in door-to-door collection and waste segregation at the source. Residents decided not to wait for municipal bodies and instead took matters into their own hands, determined to transform Gurugram into the clean and green city they aspire to live in.
