Gurugram Air: Citizens Demand Action on Pollution

Gurugram residents, through their welfare associations, have formally submitted a detailed citizen-led roadmap to local civic authorities. This initiative aims to address the city's severe and worsening air pollution by proposing stringent, time-bound actions. The document outlines specific standard operating procedures (SOPs) designed to tackle pervasive dust hotspots and improve overall road cleanliness, while also emphasizing agency accountability.

The proposed roadmap, developed with input from 'Making Model Gurugram,' calls for non-negotiable minimum standards for dust control. These include covering construction materials, managing loose soil, and implementing regular mechanical sweeping and water sprinkling. The plan stresses the need for clear responsibility mapping for road maintenance, sanitation, and green belts, moving beyond seasonal enforcement to ensure consistent daily action.

Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) officials have indicated that these citizen-proposed SOPs could significantly streamline enforcement efforts. Discussions are underway regarding whether the SOPs will be formally notified or remain advisory, with GMDA slated to lead implementation and monitoring. A follow-up meeting is planned with citizen groups to coordinate implementation on priority stretches.
