Prosecution Looms for Officials Over Repeated Dust Pollution Failures
8 Nov
Summary
- Officials to face prosecution for repeated dust pollution control failures.
- 174 violations found on roads maintained by Gurugram's civic body.
- CAQM demands action report on dust control measures implementation.
Officials within the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) are set to face prosecution due to persistent failures in controlling road dust pollution. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) issued a directive on Friday, November 8, 2026, ordering MCG to file a complaint against responsible individuals, including supervisory officers. This action stems from an inspection that identified 174 violations on roads under the civic body's maintenance.
The CAQM's order followed multiple inspections and a hearing on November 3, where MCG representatives admitted to mechanical road-sweeping machines operating at only 50-60% efficiency. They proposed improvements by mid-November and committed to regular deep cleaning and door-to-door waste collection. However, the commission highlighted that these promises did not rectify the already documented violations.
Previous inspections, including one on October 14, documented 258 violations across MCG and Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) maintained roads, comprising excessive dust, construction waste, and potholes. Public complaints regarding dust pollution have also been significant, with over 1,135 received for MCG alone. Despite repeated directives, dust control implementation remains unsatisfactory, exacerbating air quality issues across Delhi-NCR.
