Gurugram Boosts Infra: Sewer Network, Waste-to-Energy Planned
20 Mar
Summary
- GMDA takes over 69-km sewer network for improved infrastructure.
- Strict action planned against illegal groundwater extraction.
- New electric buses and waste-to-energy plant are part of plans.

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is set to significantly upgrade the city's infrastructure by assuming operation and maintenance of a 69-km sewer network spanning sectors 81 to 115. This move aims to enhance urban development and environmental standards.
In parallel, authorities have been directed to enforce stringent measures against illegal groundwater extraction. This initiative is part of broader efforts to improve water sustainability. Micro sewage treatment plants (STPs) are also planned for decentralized management, reducing reliance on centralized systems and promoting reuse.
Further infrastructure enhancements include a proposed 25 MW waste-to-energy plant and a 20 MLD common effluent treatment plant in Manesar. The city is also investing in urban mobility with plans to procure 200 electric buses and establish new depots. These developments are aligned with the Haryana Vision 2047 roadmap, focusing on timely execution and accountability to improve the quality of life.
The mandatory use of treated wastewater for non-potable purposes like construction and horticulture is another key directive to bolster water sustainability. Joint inspections of existing sewer pipelines are also scheduled to assess their condition and efficiency. Additionally, efforts are being intensified under the CAQM action plan to control dust and manage construction waste.
