Fashion Designer Tackles Gurugram's Environmental Woes

Anuradha Dhawan, a Gurugram resident, transitioned from fashion design to environmental advocacy due to concerns about fashion waste. She now focuses on "honest sustainability," creating multi-functional garments designed for longevity and repair. Her "Around The Des" initiative aims to integrate lifestyle choices like fashion, food, and farming into a broader environmental dialogue, with its "SWAPnotShop" project successfully circulating over 700 garments since 2023.

Seven years ago, Dhawan became a key member of the Aravalli Bachao Citizens Movement, actively opposing detrimental environmental policies and practices. Her activism extends to fighting against illegal mining, landfill expansion, and weakened environmental safeguards, particularly concerning the Aravalli range. She has dedicated significant effort to environmental education, mentoring hundreds and developing outreach programs.

Dhawan envisions a sustainable Gurugram with decentralized systems, enhanced public transport, and protected natural spaces. Her ongoing work includes collaboration with international organizations on a Global Sustainable Fashion Directory. Her core message emphasizes environmental mindfulness, intentionality, and consistent action.
