Gurugram Dumping Ground Lacks Basic Walls, Attracts Pests
20 Mar
Summary
- Dumping ground lacks boundary walls, posing health risks.
- Sanitation workers operate without essential protective gear.
- Boundary wall construction ongoing, expected completion in six months.

A designated waste dumping ground in Gurugram's Sector 70, serving at least 15 wards, is reportedly lacking essential infrastructure, including boundary walls and demarcation. Residents have observed open waste piles containing various types of refuse, which attract flies and stray cattle, significantly impacting local living conditions. The site operates daily with a substantial number of trucks delivering waste from different areas.
Sanitation workers at the dumping ground have been observed working without protective gear such as gloves and boots. Despite the unsanitary conditions and strong odors, workers express a sense of resignation. Local businesses, including roadside eateries situated near the dump, are also affected, with a high prevalence of flies posing contamination risks to food.
Officials acknowledge the smell from the site but claim no formal complaints have been received from nearby societies. The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) stated that boundary wall construction is underway in phases, with five sites already completed. Tenders for the remaining sites have been issued, and work is expected to be finished within the next six months. The MCG also stated that safety kits are provided to workers, though this was not observed at the dumping ground.
