Gurugram's Ozone Levels Spike in Afternoon Heat
13 Jun
Summary
- Ozone concentrations nearly doubled in Gurugram afternoons.
- Sunlight drives ozone formation via chemical reactions.
- WHO links ozone to serious public health concerns.

Ozone concentrations in Gurugram saw a significant increase after sunrise, peaking in the afternoon between 12 PM and 4 PM at nearly twice their normal levels. This pattern, observed from January to May, highlights ozone's prominence during warmer months. Unlike particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) which accumulates overnight, ozone is a secondary pollutant formed by sunlight-induced reactions.
These reactions involve precursor gases emitted from vehicles, industries, and solvent use. As solar radiation weakens in the evening, ozone formation slows. Experts note that nighttime PM spikes are due to stable atmospheric conditions that trap pollutants near the ground, while daytime heating enhances dispersion. Monthly data from March to May showed rising ozone levels, correlating with warmer temperatures and stronger solar radiation, while PM concentrations steadily declined.
