NGT Probes Gurgaon Township for Eco-Violations

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has initiated proceedings against authorities and stakeholders concerning alleged environmental violations at the 327-acre Mayfield Gardens township in Gurgaon. The NGT's principal bench is examining issues raised by the Orchid Island Residents Welfare Association, which include claims of construction proceeding without necessary environmental clearance and illegal groundwater extraction.

Further allegations involve faulty sewage infrastructure and the improper granting of environmental clearance for parts of the development without assessing cumulative impacts. The NGT has directed officials to prevent any illegal construction at the site until the next hearing, scheduled for November 16. The tribunal's order acknowledges that the issues presented warrant examination and seeks responses from the relevant parties.

This matter has previously reached the Union environment ministry, with a complaint filed in June 2025 alleging that environmental clearance for site HS-02 was granted despite unresolved ownership questions and without comprehensive studies. The RWA's petition continues to highlight these concerns, which are now under the NGT's scrutiny.

The tribunal's intervention underscores the importance of environmental compliance in large-scale urban developments. The directive to halt illegal construction pending further review highlights the seriousness with which the NGT is treating these allegations.
