Wastewater Gets New Life in Gurgaon's Green Spaces
21 Aug
Summary
- 27 MLD treated wastewater to be reused for horticulture and ponds.
- Pipelines deliver water to police training center and villages.
- Quality checks ensure treated water meets safety standards.

Gurgaon is launching an innovative project to repurpose approximately 27 million liters per day (MLD) of treated wastewater. This recycled water will be utilized for horticultural purposes, the upkeep of green spaces, and replenishing ponds in Bhondsi and nearby villages. Three separate pipelines have been constructed to channel the treated water from the Behrampur Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) to key locations, including the Police Training Centre (PTC), Gairatpur Bass, and Tikli.
To ensure the water's suitability for its intended uses, officials from the Haryana State Pollution Control Board have been tasked with conducting thorough quality checks. Principal Adviser D.S. Dhesi emphasized the importance of regular monitoring to guarantee that the reused water is environmentally safe and adheres to all prescribed standards.
The PTC Bhondsi will receive about 18 MLD through a 7.6-km pipeline, facilitating the maintenance of its extensive campus, parade grounds, and horse stables. Another pipeline will supply 4 MLD to Gairatpur Bass for filling eleven ponds, while a third line will deliver 5 MLD to Tikli for three local ponds.
This strategic reuse of treated wastewater is expected to significantly reduce the demand for fresh water, which would otherwise be needed for these non-potable applications. GMDA CEO P.C. Meena highlighted that this effort aligns with the authority's broader commitment to increasing the productive reuse of treated wastewater and lessening reliance on freshwater resources.
