Gurgaon: Plastic Fines Dominate, Waste Dumping Ignored

Gurgaon's Municipal Corporation of Greater Faridabad (MCG) has conducted an extensive enforcement drive, issuing 7,763 challans between January and July 17. However, the data reveals a significant focus on plastic violations, which accounted for nearly 63% of all fines. This concentration on banned polythene use stands in stark contrast to violations related to illegal dumping of garbage and construction waste.

While residents frequently report issues with indiscriminate waste disposal and construction debris, these categories saw very few challans. Illegal dumping of garbage attracted only nine challans, and construction and demolition waste resulted in 301 challans. Littering and non-bulk waste dumping accounted for just 189 challans. The second-largest category of enforcement was for bins being unavailable or overflowing, with 1,630 cases.

Enforcement against bulk waste generators and for septage-related violations was also limited. Overall, the MCG reported a high recovery rate, collecting 92.1% of the imposed penalties, which amounted to Rs 1.2 crore out of a total of Rs 1.5 crore.

Residents express concern that the MCG's enforcement priorities may not align with the most visible cleanliness issues affecting the city, suggesting a need to re-evaluate the allocation of resources towards offences with a greater impact on public spaces.
