Gujarat Roars Back: Tiger Returns After 33 Years!

Gujarat has officially regained its 'Tiger State' status after a 33-year absence, marking a significant conservation achievement. The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has confirmed the presence of a tiger in Ratanmahal Wildlife Sanctuary, prompting Gujarat's inclusion in the national Tiger Census. This development signifies a proud moment as Gujarat is now the sole Indian state simultaneously hosting lions, tigers, and leopards.

Forest officials first detected tiger pugmarks and later captured an image via camera trap, leading to the NTCA's investigation and subsequent confirmation. The state government has pledged to strengthen the tiger's habitat by ensuring adequate water, prey species like spotted deer and antelopes, and robust security measures. Efforts are also underway to train forest personnel and potentially introduce a female tiger to bolster the population, with aspirations for Ratanmahal Sanctuary to be declared a Tiger Reserve.

This return of tigers is a monumental occasion, especially considering their near extinction in Gujarat. Tigers were last officially noted by pugmarks in 1989, and the state was excluded from the census in 1992. A brief sighting in 2019 offered a glimmer of hope, but this recent confirmation marks a sustained return, celebrated as a triumph of conservation efforts.
