Gujarat Lions Roar: Population Boom Sparks Human Conflict

Gujarat's Asiatic lion population has reached 891, marking a significant conservation achievement. However, this success has led to a dramatic 430 percent expansion of their territory, resulting in more frequent incursions into human settlements and agricultural areas. This has heightened anxieties and led to several unfortunate encounters between lions and local residents.

The state forest department is implementing a comprehensive strategy to address this challenge. This includes enhanced monitoring through technology like thermal drones and radio collars, alongside strict enforcement against lion harassment and illegal tourism. New commercial developments are frozen in the Greater Gir region, and illegal establishments are being dismantled.

Measures to protect agricultural fields, such as solar fencing and boundary walls, are being deployed. Additionally, a zero-tolerance policy is in effect for disruptive social media activities involving lions, with FIRs filed under the Wildlife Protection Act and swift legal action taken. These efforts aim to ensure the safety of both residents and the lion population.
