Summary
- New initiative pairs charities with businesses to reduce food waste.
- Surplus food from eateries will be offered in "magic bags" at reduced prices.
- Scheme aims to combat food waste and provide affordable food options.

A new initiative, SOS Guernsey Food Angel, is set to launch, aiming to significantly reduce food waste and address food accessibility challenges across Guernsey. The non-profit organisation's program connects surplus food from hospitality businesses, including cafes, restaurants, and hotels, with the local community.
This innovative scheme will offer 'magic bags' containing fresh food at a reduced price shortly before closing times or before items reach their expiry dates. These bags will be available through a mobile app and online platform, making affordable food accessible to residents and simultaneously reducing the island's annual food waste of approximately 1,500 tonnes.
Beyond reducing waste, SOS Guernsey Food Angel also strives to remove the stigma associated with seeking assistance. Founder Hansen Canagareddy emphasized the importance of dignity, ensuring individuals can access help without invasive screening processes. Businesses can register for free, with the platform managing secure payments and fostering positive community impact.
The official launch event for SOS Guernsey Food Angel is scheduled to take place at the Duke Hotel on Wednesday.
