GSPCA Celebrates Major Milestone
18 Oct
Summary
- Charity's wildlife hospital roof completion celebrated.
- New facilities aim to treat seals, birds, and hedgehogs.
- Project estimated to cost between £3.7m and £4m.
A topping out ceremony on Thursday celebrated the completion of the roof for the Guernsey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) new wildlife hospital. This purpose-built facility is designed to provide advanced care for various animals, including puffins, hedgehogs, seals, and birds.
GSPCA manager Steve Byrne indicated that with the building now watertight, parts of the facility could be operational by the end of the year. This timeline is crucial, as the charity aims to be ready for the grey seal pup season, which runs from October to January, after operating from temporary sites for two years.
The ambitious project has an estimated cost between £3.7m and £4m. Despite facing unexpected challenges like asbestos discovery and sewage system rebuilding, significant savings were achieved through donations of materials and labor. The charity continues to work on other sections, including kennels and ferret facilities, with the hospital being the main focus of their 'big build'.
